“Once upon a time” is a collaborative exhibition project conceived by a group of Chilean artists that aims to explore the repercussions of political violence. It is comprised of two different art exhibitions in two cities that have witnessed political repression in their recent history: Berlin, Germany and Santiago, Chile.

“Once upon a time” seeks to rescue the collective historical experience of subjects who have endured political violence in varying cultural contexts. It is at its core an inquiry into the emotions and motivations of the victims and perpetrators respectively. What exactly leads groups of people in specific historical moments to seek the annihilation of “the radical other”?

The exhibition presents five artists’ attempts at understanding the phenomena of repression and violence as a historical constant regardless of geography. The products of these reflections take the form of metaphors and symbols that are intimately connected to their personal histories and origins.

In “Once upon a time”, is the result of  a discussion of  the cultural exchange between the participants and by the political climate of the city in which the project will be developed. One of the shows will take place at 91mQ, an art space located in former East Berlin, the epicentre of Germany’s political and geographical struggles in the 20th century. In Santiago, the exhibition will take place at the Galería Guillermo Nuñez of the Comuna de El Bosque. The Chilean Air Force headquarters nearby was the site of systematic tortures, including renowned Chilean artist Guillermo Nuñez, the man who became the gallery’s namesake.
